Trine Dyrholm stars in new Danish WW1 movie “Erna at War”, directed by Henrik Ruben Genz.
The new Danish drama, ERNA AT WAR, from award winning director Henrik Ruben Genz starts shooting on August 29th. Trine Dyrholm will take on the role of Erna, an exceptional and powerful woman ahead of her time who goes through fire and water – and a world war to protect her mentally disabled son, played by the young talent, Sylvester Byder.
Despite being deemed unsuitable for war, Erna’s son, Kalle, is summoned to the front by the good-natured country officer Meier (Ulrich Thomsen). In order to stay close to Kalle, Erna exchanges clothes and identity with a deserted soldier, and as “Private Julius Rasmussen” she enrolls herself in regiment 86. Soon, Erna finds herself embedded in an ultra-masculine world and heading to the front disguised as a man. Failing to protect Kalle she faces not only the enemy but also the love of her life when she meets the blacksmith Anton (Anders W. Berthelsen) in the trenches.
ERNA AT WAR is the tale of an extraordinary woman who defies all odds and lights up in the midst of darkness to fight for what matters the most to her in this world.
The film is based on a novel by Erling Jepsen and with a screenplay by Bo Hr. Hansen and Henrik Ruben Genz – a duo who most recently collaborated on WORD OF GOD (2017).
ERNA AT WAR is shot in Denmark, Belgium and Estonia, and has an expected premiere in September 2020. The film is produced by Birgitte Hald and Nynne Selin Eidnes, Nimbus Film, co-produced by Sébastien Delloye ENTRE CHEN LOUP and Esko Rips, NAFTA FILMS with support from the Danish Film Institute, TV2 Denmark, FilmFyn, TV4, Estonian Film Institute, Tartu Film Fund, Belgian Film Institute, Wallimage and Creative Europe Media and distributed by Scanbox Entertainment.
